Spiralps and Spirulina Goodness

IMG_20151108_210755

Being a health foodie, I'm always curious to try new health products and foods. So when I was           contacted by Spiralps to try their "Spiralps detox plan", I got excited!

I tried a couple of times to add dried spirulina in my smoothies, in powder form, but the taste was so strong and frankly horrible, that it was hard to drink it all up and felt like I wasted a good & delicious green smoothie. I didn't get used to it so I switch to supplements and have been taking them every now and then.

This detox came up at a good time as Autumn was in full swing. It was a good time to prepare my body for winter and boost my immune system.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae usually found in fresh water lakes. It is made of proteins and amino acids including essential fatty acids. It also contains  a high range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

THE BENEFITS OF SPIRULINA:

Spirulina is often considered as a superfood,  rich in anti-inflammatory properties, it reduces inflammation, enhance your immune system and has anticancer properties. High in chlorophyll, it helps the body to get rid of toxins and heavy metals. It contains a lot of calcium and the high level of iron makes it a great option for vegetarians and vegans. The vitamin A keeps your eyes healthy.

SPIRALPS DETOX PLAN:

The detox plan suggests to cut out meat, dairy and processed food a few days before starting the drinks to prepare the body. The detox lasts for 7 days. The first 2 days, you drink 2 small bottles of spirulina per day and then one big bottle everyday for the next 5 days, containing higher levels of spirulina. They do taste a bit more than the little ones but you get used to it and nothing compared to the powder form.

With the Spiralps bottles, you'll receive a little booklet with information on food guidelines and ways to make the most of your detox week. They recommend a lot of things I do and suggest as well in general, like focusing on your sleep, dry brushing your skin, going out and breathing fresh air, moving your body, doing yoga or gentle exercise, sauna, meditation and drinking lots of water.

How I felt during the detox:

  • High on energy
  • Less appetite
  • Less brain fog, more clarity
  • Restful sleep

As I already eat mainly whole foods, I didn't have to change that much my diet for the week. I really felt the boost in energy and was also less hungry. I did the detox on a busy week so it gave me extra energy and I felt great and energized during the whole time. I managed to sleep really early and have good night sleeps too.

It's a good way to start with a detox plan to change some of your food habits and reset your body. It's not a restrictive diet in the sense that you don't have to change the amount of food and you can eat whatever you want- just not the food in the categories I mentioned earlier. You just add the spirulina drinks to your day. Think of it as a little break for your body.

I would definitely recommend it as an energy booster, if you are feeling sluggish, want to reset your body or want to detox and get rid of heavy metals in your body.

If you're pregnant, nursing or have any illness or medical condition, check with your doctor first before starting a cleanse or adding spirulina to your diet.

SPIRALPS is the first drink made with fresh spirulina. It is organic and produced in the Swiss Alps. They use a new cold technique to pasteurize the spirulina, which preserves its best quality.

* It is my first promotion post and just to specify, I am only promoting products that I have used  and liked. I really did feel the health benefits and will do a cleanse every season and take spirulina supplements the rest of the time as a little extra boost.

Jump into Spring!

Can words describe the fragrance of the very breath of spring?

Neltje Blanchan

Oh I love spring time! There's nothing better than waking up to the sounds of birds singing, feeling the warmer air, blue sky and rays of sunshine. After those long snowy months, spring is like a magical gift!

I love the birds chirping, spending more time outside, longer days, the smell of blooming flowers, farmer's market, berries, asparagus and spring cleaning! Spring brings this idea of a fresh start and new beginnings. The flowers are blooming, trees are budding, the light is brighter, the breeze is warmer, nature is coming back to life and so are you! Spring is the season for cleansing and rejuvenating your body after heavy cold months with less exercise, heavier food and less sunshine. It's time to take care of yourself, in body, mind and spirit.

A few of my favorite ideas to regain energy and detox your body & mind!

  • Drink lots of water to hydrate your body. It helps flush your toxins.
  • Drink some lemon water with ginger, a dash of cayenne pepper  and turmeric. Great to detox and packed with health benefits.
  • Put your sneakers on and go outside for a run/walk, jump on your trampoline, time to go back to your yoga routine or any physical activity that puts you in a good mood and will help release those endorphins, boost your immune system and improve your health.
  • Declutter your space. Get rid of all the clothes you don't wear anymore, the things that are only taking the dust, everything you haven't used the past year. Make room for the new. A clear space makes a clear mind. It's so much better to come home to a fresh environment where everything is light and organized. There's a real feeling of lightness that comes with clearing your space.
  • Boost your energy with whole organic fresh food in season. Add fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains to your meals. Nature is perfectly made to bring food that we need for our bodies to detox after winter, like cherries, berries, asparagus, leafy greens. Juices and smoothies are packed with nutrients. Avoid sugar, processed foods, dairy, alcohol and meat for 10 days or more. You will gain energy and feel the good vibes!
  • Start a meditation practice, connect with nature around you and enjoy the present moment.
  • Dry body brushing: before you hop in the shower, use a dry brush and scrub in circular motions all over your body, always start from your feet towards your heart. It stimulates your circulation and the lymphatic system and get rid of toxins, dead skin and cellulite.
  • End your shower with cold water- it's good for your blood circulation, immune system and it gives you a boost when you wake up!
  • It's also a great time to do some planning and review your goals & dreams and see where you want to go and what you want to achieve with your precious life.

What are you looking forward to with spring coming up?

Happy Spring Day!

The Wonderful Benefits of Saunas & Hammams

Yes! It's that time of the year! As the cold and freezing air is slowly arriving, what better way to keep warm then to enjoy some wellness time with a sauna or hammam! We need to have good things to look forward during this hibernation time, right?!  It's a place to relax, unwind from the busy day, detoxify your body and enjoy a special time for yourself or with your friends!

Hammams (also called turkish baths/steamed room) have been used for centuries, since the Roman Empire, in many countries. Women in the Middle East have used hammams as a wellness ritual, a special quality time where they could meet. It was a place where no social distinctions existed. A place for the body and mind to connect. A place where you could feel rebirth. Even though it lost a little bit of its significance, hammams are still an enchanting place to let your mind wander while your body rejuvenate.

Saunas, on the other hand, come from the North. They're originally from Finland but you can find them in many houses in scandinavian countries. It is also a social and family tradition and has been used for the past 2000 years.

The main difference between a sauna and a hammam is the humidity. Saunas use dry heat and is composed of woods with vulcano rocks to heat it up in a little cabin, and it goes up to 100°C /200 °F while hammams contain 100% humidity with a lower temperature. The time spent in saunas is around 15 minutes maximum due to the high heat.

There are wonderful benefits of saunas and hammams:

  • They are stress relievers. They relax your body and mind and can also help your tense muscles and that is why they are great after a workout to recuperate.
  • They improve your circulation.
  • They help get rid of toxins.
  • They cleanse your skin and improve its elasticity as the sweat detoxes your pores and you'll come out with a glowing fresh face!
  • They help strengthen your immune system, which is a good thing in winter!

If you have any health problems, it is better to consult your doctor prior using them. It isn't recommended for people with heart issues, high blood pressure and inflammation due to the high temperature. It is also important to keep hydrating yourself, so don't forget to drink water before, during and after.

Do you go to saunas or hammams? Do you have any rituals around them? I'd be happy to hear about them! I often go with my girl friends and it really is a time for wellness and self care in good company. What about you?!

Happy Day!
